An introduction to Ahwaz oil field

The Ahwaz oil field is a sinusoidal anticline and nearly symmetrical alongside the Northwest-Southeast direction and is situated underneath part of the city of Ahwaz in the northern Dezful area. The Ahwaz oilfield is comprised of two main reservoirs - Asmari and Bangestan.

The Ahwaz oil field is one of the largest oilfields in the world. The oil field was put into production in the 1970s. In spite of its production rate fluctuations in the past four decades and its ongoing key production challenge, it is considered amongst the most important fields of the National Iranian South Oil Company.

This research and technological study is aimed to propose some problem-solving methods for production processes optimization and enhanced oil recovery of two reservoirs of Ahwaz oil field. Research Institute of Petroleum Industry and the National Iranian South Oil Company are supposed to cooperate closely for 10 years as partners in this project.

Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)

Recognition of Ahwaz oil, field characteristics Oil filed challenges identification and breaking down into topics on which research can be done, Screening of all EOR techniques

Updating the reservoir simulation model, Numerical and analytical simulation of selected EOR methods obtained from Phase 1

Proposing technological methods to resolve the field challenges Experimental investigation of EOR methods and production processes

Improving the reservoir simulation model based on the results obtained from Phase 3

Design and implementation of pilot test and evaluation of its results

Collaborating companies

Research Institute of Petroleum Industry (RIPI) has conducted a comprehensive investigation of Ahwaz oil field in collaboration with internal and external consultants including Delft University of Technology.
